Growing up in the San Francisco bay area, City proper, I for some reason couldn’t wait to get out of it. Everyday held a grand scheme or plot to get out of it. To this end, I found myself hanging out on AOL-AIM, Myspace and friendster daily. I didn’t date women locally; There was always a greyhound I was jumping on to meet them with. I only had a few friends in the city, but all my main friends were in Japan.
So needless to say I was all about the travel. The only thing keeping me tethered to the city was the need to make money. It was hard to make a living remotely within my skillset back in my day. Because there wasn’t an FLstudio or USB all in one studio setup that was easy to lug around in a backpack. However, I still did it. I still travelled and still did my best to make money out there in the world remotely. While things didn’t begin to materialize into the fully efficient digital nomad life until 2012, I was doing this long before there was even a name for it.
That might be the reason, It wasn’t until the 2010s that technology started making remote work not only economically feasible, but a viable reality. In regards to me anyway. My first foray into the remote income lifestyle (i.e.: before digital nomad), involved the few times I performed when I was still into Hip Hop.
While there was big money being made by my contemporaries like hieroglyphics, living legends and my boy meikee magnetic, I didn’t carry that big money weight to my name, So it was basically do a show where I could, sell a CD then back to work in the home City. This however was a reality for even the guys I mentioned above at one point. They just had more money to show for it at the end of the day.
Anyway, While I’m glad to be still active and vigor enough to partake in this current evolution of remote working and location independent income, It’s nothing new to me in general. It is however better than when I was 20 and doing it. MUCH BETTER! There are Digital Nomad visas being offered by Estonia, Virtual offices, international mobile phones, discord and zoom ECT. Heck, I didn’t even know there was a name for what I did until 2 years ago.
